The Architectural Urban Interior Design – AUID – Ph.D. Program promotes studies on architecture mostly on these aspects: design, theory, history, technology.
The methodological frame is the design-driven research.
We consider design the cultural environment where to produce theoretical and technical knowledge.

AUID Talk & Drink

January 21, 2020 @ 18:00 - 19:30

Research by Design
with/by Marco Hemmerling

A discussion with Jens Böke and Max Salzberger curated and moderated by Luigi Cocchiarella

Every research context is shaped by the respective disciplinary prerequisites, which generate certain scientific and methodological criteria that lead to different practices and results. The development of architectural concepts follows its own disciplinary context, which establishes spatial artefacts by means of drawings, models and prototypes. In this sense, every successful architectural concept is a research project that integrates a wide range of different aspects within a unique research-based design. Then, could research thus also arise from design?

Marco Hemmerling is Professor of Computational Design in Architecture at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and Visiting Professor at AUIC School. Marco is a founding partner of SPADE and during his several years as project architect at UNStudio in Amsterdam, he was jointly responsible for the design and realisation of the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.

Jens Böke is PhD researcher at the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at the TU Delft. He is a member of the Architectural façade and Products research group. From 2016 to 2019 he was Research Associate in the team for Computational Design in Architecture (CODE ARCH) at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences.

Max Salzberger is a member of the research staff at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and PhD researcher at the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at the TU Delft. Max also teaches digital manufacturing at the chamber of crafts in Cologne, and is a founding member of Atelier SLOW in Cologne.

Luigi Cocchiarella, Politecnico di Milano, Dastu/Auic, is Associate Professor of Architectural Drawing, member of the teaching board of the PhD Architectural, Urban and Interior Design.
